A crown restoration is used for repairing cusps, the pointed structures on a tooth, when they are damaged by tooth decay. They are a popular option in the repertoire of a cosmetic dentist. Dr. Pham and his team will first remove the tooth decay.
A filling is then applied to support the crown, the tooth is prepared to accept the crown, and a temporary crown is inserted. Before inserting the temporary crown the dentist makes a model of your teeth to be sent to the dental lab where an exact model of your tooth will be made out of a ceramic material or a combination of metal and a ceramic material.
At a following appointment, the temporary crown will be removed and the custom-made final crown will be cemented in place on top of the prepared tooth. Crowns are sometimes called “caps”.
